Much has been written on the subject of marijuana, including articles in popular magazines and scientific journals, mostly about the negative aspects of this botanical. Therefore, there has been a need for an easy-to-read book with the necessary scientific data so that the public - especially patients - can benefit from knowing how unfairly this botanical had been demonized.
For centuries, the botanical was recognized as one of the worst on earth, one leading to the addictive behavior of millions. (Something false, as we will see in this book.) I had learned that it was a highly addictive narcotic with no pharmaceutical benefit whatsoever. It only served to "dope you up, give you a high, and drive you mad" if you smoked it. For years, that's what I believed, and in fact, that's what I taught to my psychiatry students. This could not be farther from the truth.
All vertebrates, including humans, have an endocannabinoid system. Even more significant, the system plays an important role in practically every system of the body - including the nervous and the immune system.
Unfortunately, scientific research on the botanical has been seriously limited, given that it is still a Class 1 drug. Notwithstanding this restriction, medicinal marijuana has proven to be a remedy or medication capable of improving the quality of many lives.
I hope I have been able to fulfill my goal and that, for many of you, this is only the beginning of a greater understanding of The Queen of Green Medicine.
