New Year's Eve melancholy is not an expression of what Sam Ash is feeling right now: after all, exactly a year ago she was sitting in front of the altar. Not even a visit to her beloved Uncle Mate can dispel the dark clouds from her soul. Reluctantly, she lets herself be persuaded to come to the New Year's Eve party at Jack's Bar.
