Brief Description

We have found a treasure! A jewel hidden in dark shelves. In this new volume of Amazing Magazine Illustrations, we are pleased to share this discovery with you.

A painter forgotten by all, of reduced labor and brief existence. Strange, bizarre, and unique illustrations, published in an anodyne 19th-century magazine.

The nineteenth-century illustrations in journals, while bearing the imprint of each illustrator, were similar. The trends and techniques served as a frame of reference that guided the work of hundreds of illustrators. That is why it is not easy to find pieces that deviate from the governing aesthetic and technical guidelines of the time.

In this new volume of Amazing Magazine Illustrations, we have the pleasure of presenting an exception to the rule: El Bromista (The Funnyman).

El Bromista presented itself as an: "Illustrated weekly newspaper. Literary, humorous, hilarious, and serious, from the students of the School of Arts and Crafts... El Bromista is not what you, perhaps, imagine. El Bromista can be like a fish that slips away and still become as subtle and fleeting as your thoughts."

The illustrations we find in El Bromista are, for the most part, first-rate, definitive sketches that were not created to evolve. We can conjecture that their unfinished nature responds to the lack of resources that could be destined to the production of the magazine, or simply to the lack of expertise of the illustrators, perhaps students of drawing and painting at the school itself. Another possible reading the grant of artistic intentionality, a sign of "rebelliousness" against the prevailing type of illustration back then. A new way of recording social evolution by ridiculing, from the unfinished, "dirty" line of the drawing, the reflection of an always imperfect society, portrayed by "dark subjects, without friends and with the innate quality of making fun of burials."

More than 100 years after his creation, we have rescued from oblivion these marvelous illustrations, strange and sometimes bizarre, which, even out of their context, are capable of transmitting energy, rebellion, and beauty.

This book gathers 170 black and white illustrations. The illustrations were processed with an Ink Sketch effect to highlight the lines of the drawings and remove color saturation. The objective is not to achieve high-quality images, but it responds to an aesthetic intention.

The book comes with a download link. It provides access to both the images and magazines from which the illustrations were obtained.
This allows artists and designers to draw on the original sources to create their own interpretations and bring "new life" to these timeless illustrations.
